Smart transport system (STS) tests have begun in Nizhny Novgorod. Representatives of the Transport Systems Development Center and Urbantech Group of Companies, the STS implementation contractor, announced this on 25 January.
Upgrades of 28 traffic lights units in the city’s busiest crossings in the Gorkogo, Belinskogo, Rodionova, Sovetskaya Streets, the Gagarina Avenue and the Pokhvalinsky Ramp were completed by the beginning of 2023. 63 video cameras now installed in these locations capture traffic accidents and other incidents. Furthermore, 96 transport detectors automatically gather traffic information that allows to manage traffic in real time and optimize public transport priority passage solutions.
"The STS we are now deploying will solve tasks related to the functioning of the Nizhny Novgorod agglomeration’s transport sector. These include improvement of traffic safety, auto transport and population mobility enhancements, real-time traffic management with public transport priority passage solutions, provision of a common digital space for collaboration among all participants engaged in the transport sector," said Igor Kanatchenko, Director of the Integration Projects Department at Urbantech.
The next stage after information gathering will be the capability to automatically tweak traffic lights operation thereby unclogging the streets and securing priority passage for public transport. Preliminary estimates are that the STS test operation will last for about half a year.
"The smart traffic flow management system will first of all be implemented in main traffic arteries that play a vital role in logistics, host many public transport routes, often linking together Nizhny Novgorod districts. There are 37 such streets, spanning about 95 km in total," said Alexander Bachurin, Deputy Director of the Transport Systems Development Center for the Nizhny Novgorod Region.
The STS infrastructure being deployed will also enable the TSDC Situation Center personnel to gain access to the data on traffic accidents, road incidents, and manage the road maintenance process. For example, data from connected weather sensors will allow to analyze weather conditions and plan for the anti-icing treatment of drive ways.
